#hellorijeka: Building Community Stitch by Stitch

The embroidery workshop at the Rijeka City Library is designed as a welcoming activity for people who have recently moved to Rijeka and would like to connect with others. By learning the basics of hand embroidery, participants will explore this traditional craft while also expressing their own stories through personal designs.

The first session, inspired by Rijeka, is an introduction to both the technique and the context. Participants will embroider simple symbols related to Rijeka while becoming familiar with its culture and visual identity. In the following sessions, the workshop will expand to include motifs from other cities and countries, depending on the backgrounds and interests of the participants, encouraging exchange and mutual learning.

The workshop also incorporates informal Croatian language learning through conversation and the sharing of words and expressions connected to daily life and the creative process. In this way, participants will not only develop embroidery skills, but also build their language confidence and sense of belonging in the community.

Through shared making, conversation, and exchange of experiences, the workshop creates a supportive and inclusive environment where new connections and friendships can grow.
